Beginnings
I've always been a writin' fool. I wrote poetry and essays as a kid. In school, I always voted to write a paper instead of taking a test. (I wasn't very popular with my classmates!) I had a diary as an adolescent girl, and it had to be 'locked!' to retain all that private info about boys! But I never got serious about putting my feelings on paper until January 7, 1974. My first major relationship was about to crumble, and I needed to vent. So I found one of those black and white mottled composition books amidst my college books, and I vented. "Why does such an excellent relationship have to end overnight?" was the opening line of 27 years of venting. Well, mostly venting. This has been my journal's main purpose - to scream, question, shape crooked lines into straight ones. It's done well, I must say. But I have also recorded trips, day by day, meal by meal, hike by hike. I've written poetry, drawn pictures, recorded dreams, pasted in astrological forecasts, and written as much as possible about my new babies. Aspects like this make a journal different than a diary. A diary is a record of daily events. I tried keeping one as an adult, but the spaces for writing were too small for my wild pen, so I went back to my expressive journal. Expressive - that's the keyword for journaling. You can record your daily events, but then you're allowed to express your feelings about them. I hope to turn you on
to journaling here. If you already keep a journal, I hope to inspire you
to experiment with it. |
